Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
