Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations show the liquid was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.

An important official stated the incident left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
