Our Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, Lux may look more like a challenging university quiz rather than the latest pop record by a musician who just had a last single featured an international pop icon. Split into 4 different sections and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the lens of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched upwards here, supported by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure ambition alone renders the work of other pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing is almost miraculous, with complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, the scale feel much greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines clearly during the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic force. The song immediately shifts into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to know—where it will go next."

Nearly each song ends in a completely different point than where it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her earlier trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the gap between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins skyward. That feat is repeated by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes time to fully explore but never seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
