No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
